2007 Highlights: Governors in over a dozen states have created task forces to address global warming. In the Midwest, five states have groups in various stages of deliberations:

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle created a Global Warming Task Force in June that will soon submit its findings and recommendations. Work group policies and comments are posted on the website.

Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty’s Climate Change Advisory Group, created in April, will present its final report to the Governor and legislature by February 1, 2008.

Iowa Governor Chet Culver’s Climate Change Advisory panel will report by January 1, 2008 and includes members of the legislature. It was created in April.

In February, Illinois Governor Blagojevich announced his intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and 60% below 1990 levels by 2050. The Climate Change Advisory Group completed its work in the fall and will send its recommendations to the Governor in early 2008.

In November, Michigan Governor Granholm created a Climate Action Council that will develop a comprehensive climate action plan by the end of 2008.

The Climate Registry kicked off in May, with more than 30 states, several tribes, four Canadian provinces and one Mexican state participating in the effort to develop a common greenhouse gas emissions reporting system. The voluntary registry will measure, track, verify and report greenhouse gas information for participating entities.
